By rearranging our objects their specific usefulness takes on a more reverental meaning giving us an opportunity to reflect on their design beyond just utility. I’’l be inviting participants to rearrange things that might otherwise be only common and necessary holding space to reflect on both our daily work and the relationships that we have with the tools that define us.
Throughout the run of the Articulate Residency project I’ll be adding new hoops with a graffiti inspired text for inspiration as well as refreshing needlepoint supplies. You are encouraged and invited to pick up needle and thread and add to this project.
The focus of this studio space is to create an environment for myself and others to continue developing artistic practices through group projects, workshops displaying in physical and on-line spaces.
Summer’s here and we are having a blast every Tuesday night in June and August from 6-8 making projects in the RiNo Art Park. Each evening has been a sweet and mellow creative exploration, from making our own stuffed animal monsters from thrift store cast offs to teaching kids how to design tattoos.
Combining on-line classes and in person events, this year’s CRUSH Graffiti festival took deep dives into urban and street art mediums including wheat paste, yarn bombing and vinyl toy painting.
In late July this summer I asked my friends, “what was your breaking point” then added their words and images to custom made plates and shipped them around the country. My friends were tasked with breaking the china, returning it to me and adding their own documentation. I repaired these to the best of my ability, with the visible mends declaring, “by our actions, we are transformed”.
Over the last several weeks I’ve worked to adapt many of my workshops from an in-person, hands on experience to interactive, remote learning with a focus on staying connected, using what you’ve got at home for imaginative resources and continued community building
In this virtual “correspondence course of correspondence” we’ll look at ways to embellish letters and envelopes with original art and collage pieces, discuss formats for writing personal letters that make them sincere and whimsical. Along the way you’ll have handouts to print, cut and color, links to great letters through history, resources for crafting stationary and art, recommended books to order from local shops still doing mail order and a host of places to send thank you notes and other letter exchanges.
Though we share a plot, our experience of a game will be unique to each of us, we might not win, we might try to kill off another character, as we play, our stories stand alone enriching the larger narrative arc.
Over the course of the month we transformed linen scraps into award pins and brooches, refreshed vintage china plates with clip art and waterslide decals, embellished fabric crowns with antique jewelry and crafted accordion fold scrapbooks from wood engraved at InventHQ the City of Broomfield’s maker space.
This workshop hosted at ReCreative Denver is a series of activities where visual and verbal ideas play off one and other based on color samples of paints from the hardware store. Transforming hard cover books into spell journals and secret boxes is an outstanding craft project with a high WOW factor where gilded wax and dime store toys provide a creepy antique effect. Suitable for ages six through adult this workshop takes about 90 minutes and can be themed around Harry Potter, Lovecraft’s Necronomicon or just something sooky for Halloween

More and more frequently museums are including programming where art isn’t just presented but interacted with and guests are encouraged to make their own art, learn a new skill or just play around in an unfamiliar medium. As a guest presenter, I adore sitting down one on one with someone and letting them see how ordinary things can be admired objects or talking to a room full of kids about how art no matter how far away or unfamiliar can speak to all of us.

The object of Too Many Chefs is to create a full day of delectable meals from ingredient cards including dessert and midnight snack. You can expand your own recipes or play off your opponents designing signature dishes for more points. Be the 1st player to reach 100 to win or be voted to head chef by fellow foodies and you win. Too Many Chefs challenges players to get creative with their ingredients and with luck game play translates back into the kitchen inspiring real life menu and recipe design.
Believing that we are the stories we tell, artist and arts educator Shawn Bowman creates tangible objects from imaginary narrative settings, specializing in subversive craft writing, humorous modern artifacts, workshop instruction and game design. Passionate about enabling creative communities, Bowman empowers students both young and old with hands on craft projects, literacy through comic writing and creating table top games working with organizations like Denver Comicon’s Pop Culture Classroom, Denver Public Libraries, Jeffco Libraries and is on the Board of Directors for Making Progress Colorado the producers of the Denver Maker Faire.
Her cheeky, text themed art has shown in numerous shows in Colorado and Oregon as well as her own 13’ Shasta trailer pop-up space “Gallery-a-Go-Go”. Want to throw a Pie Fight Party for your friends, she’s got notes. Need 60 hand illustrated faux journals to launch your Slenderman game release, she’s done that too. From tres chic “See Behind Sunglasses” for noir vixens to “Shrink-o-matic Sandwich Space Cannons” she’s designed a plethora of absurd objects for clients and friends.
Her BFA in Film Production from the University of Colorado led to a series of cinematic adventures as a location manager for feature films in NYC and ten year stint curating children’s content for independent film festivals for her distribution company IndieKid Films. Along with her art projects these days, she’s often found noodling around at Ax and Allies Automotive a vintage European sports car shop where she is a not-so-silent partner.
Over forty artists have collaborated together to create a playable deck of cards based on unique visions and voices. As a part of my residency project at Half Crown Creative displayed a deck of cards on the wall that visitors to the studio could choose from to add to the project.
